I find that in life many people have their different fears, wether it’s heights, death, animals, or anything really. There is such a wide array of fears and phobias and different causes for these fears. I myself suffer from anxiety disorder and have fought with many different things to cause panic, but something I see and hear many people (including myself) fear is, spiders. Spiders seem to be one of the most common things a person can fear so using spiders in a picture would be a great way to represent fear. In this photograph you can see that i’ve hidden my face with my hands and have the spiders crawling out from behind my hands and hanging down from the ceiling. I feel like I did the picture while lying in bed to symbolize nightmares along with the fear the spiders show. I made it black and white because it helps the spiders stand out where in colour the bed and the walls were too distracting and it was hard to see the actual spiders hanging from the ceiling and the ones on my outfit. I think the only thing I could have done differently on this assignment would be using real fake spiders rather than just drawing them in on photoshop.
This is an image I took in Washington. After looking on the internet and trying to figure out what exactly a sunrise means, I came across the words: rebirth, new beginning, life, energy. These words are words that make you feel happy or alive, rather than fearful or scared. In life there is so much fear and sometimes we need to step back and take a pause or break from life. Sometimes life can give you all these unnecessary pains and burdens that we are required to deal with or live with. In this image, I took that to heart. This is a self portrait of me sitting on the beach down in Birch Bay, Washington. The sunrise was a symbol for my needing a new beginning or a refreshing energy. With stress and school and the works we need to be able to step back and hope for the best and this picture is that for me. Sunrise represents rebirth, and I look at that as refreshing. When a viewer looks at this image they are going to see a girl sitting on the beach and wonder whats going on. They might make assumptions that she's happy or relaxing or thinking while taking in the world around her.
Life is so short and there are so many things we do that sometimes it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to know your shortening your own life. With all the new research being found about cigarettes and how immensely harmful they are to the human body and our lungs, it’s strange to know that smoking can decrease your life expectancy. I had my mom hold this cigarette we found on the road in her hands to represent everyone that smokes and how they are basically holding their life in their own hands. I found a cigarette that is half burned because that represents the smoker; half gone and on their way to death. My mom recommended the black and white to pull focus into the sadness. Using black and white in photography can take out the colour in life and leave a sad photograph. So all in all this image represents death, the cigarette represents a cause, and the hands represent us holding death in our hands and not doing anything about it. I’m not saying smoking a cigarette will instantly kill you, just that it shortens our already small amount of time we have on this beautiful planet.
